Volume! (subtitled in French:La revue des musiques populaires - The journal of popular music studies) is a biannual (May & November) peer-reviewed academic journal "dedicated to the study of contemporary popular music".[1] It is published by Éditions Mélanie Seteun, a publishing association specialized in popular music. The journal is in French with some non-translated articles in English.[2] Articles are available for free online after 2 years. It was established in 2002 as Copyright Volume ! and obtained its current shorter title in 2009.

History

Volume! was established in 2002 under the title Copyright Volume! by Gérôme Guibert, Marie-Pierre Bonniol and Samuel Étienne, and obtained its current name in 2008. Étienne (Université de la Polynésie Française) was its first editor-in-chief (2002–2008), before Guibert (University of Paris III: Sorbonne Nouvelle) took over in 2008.[3][4]

"New journals appeared, which constitute appreciable sites of expression for young researchers to make their debut, or for foreign authors little or not known in France ([footnote:] One thinks of the journal Volume, created in 2002, which knew how to keep up with popular music's various trends)".[5]

Special issues

The journal special issues on various topics in the popular music studies, ethnomusicology, sociology, geography, cultural history etc. fields.

Recent topics include music fanzines (2006, n°5-1), metal studies (2006, n°5-2), the relationships between "music, geography, and postcolonialism" (2008, n°6-1&2), cover versions (2010, n°7-1 & 7-2), Black music (2011, n°8-1) .[6] and gender and race issues in hip-hop (2011,n°8-2).

Volume! publishes a "varia" section for articles not related to the main topic, plus editorials, open letters and book reviews.

Volume ! is published with the support of the French National Book Center (Centre National du Livre).[7] and the French National Centre for Scientific Research.[8]

Online access

Since November 2011, Volume ! is included in the French academic journals portal Revues.org[9] and since December 2011 in the Belgian portal, Cairn.info. All issues are available online (free online viewing and downloading) on Revues.org, the 4 latest ones are under restricted access on Cairn.info.

Partnership with the IASPM

The journal publishes the winner of the "young researcher" annual award given by the French-speaking branch of the IASPM.[10]
